Why did the spaniards choose to use the native Americans in the new colonies?

As far as I remember, they used them because they weren't up to date with the technologies from the European countries. The Natives were easy targets since all they had were bows and arrows, while the Spaniards had guns. They took the opportunity to use them as slaves.
