What role do vows play in the life of a lay jain person and how do those vows affect their lives outside of the jain community?

A lay jain person is expected to follow their vows which serve as a guide or code. Dedication to their vows also shows their devotion to being a lay jain. Following these vows enables them to live as good people because of their general rule that, "right conduct is the right religion."
