The explanation for why Lashley failed at finding the engram was that "some memories do not depend on the cortex".

The term engram was instituted by the little-known yet compelling memory analyst Richard Semon. Karl S. Lashley's scan for the engram found that it couldn't exist in a particular piece of the mouse's mind, yet that memory was widely divided all through the cortex.
